What Students Can Learn from Social Media Marketing Class

I have learned a lot from taking Social Media Marketing class. I graduated college with a Bachelor’s degree in 2009. So I probably took marketing class in 2008 or maybe in 2007. I don’t remember discussing anything about social media marketing in those classes. Social media was gaining popularity as a social media site for people not for marketing then. I had an idea that businesses market to customers on social media because I see the advertisements on Facebook. Or like our Facebook (business) page. I had no idea there is so much more involved. Here are a few things that I have learned from taking this class.

Blog Posts

I knew a blog post existed. I really didn’t think of blog posts as a social media site. Not sure where or how you created one. When people are doing research, most don’t know they are actually reading a blog post versus an article. I know the difference now but didn’t before I took this class. Businesses use blog posts to market their products and services. You learn about how to write blog posts and how to come up with effective titles to get your blog found.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Do you ever wonder when you search for something using Google why certain websites show up on the first page. I have actually wondered about that. Your website will not show up of the first page of results if you don’t have good SEO. The class teaches you about SEO and the best keyword or key phrases to use to get your website found.

Inbound marking starts with creating remarkable content that spreads through social media, attracts links that drives up rankings in Google. The book you need for the class is very cheap compared to other class. I think I bought it for around 10 – 15 dollars. It’s called Inbound Marketing Attract, Engage, and Delight Customers Online.

Email Marketing

We used Mailchimp to create an actual email for marketing a businesses content to send out. You learn how to create an email for marketing purposes that can be send out automatically at a set time.

Other Social Media Sites

You not only learn about the most popular social media sites, you will sign up on the sites and actually use them. You will learn how to use:

  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • Google+
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • Facebook and more

Did you know about any of the information that was mentioned above? Are you interested in learning about social media marketing?

If you haven’t taken any social media marketing classes, I suggest that you should at St. Charles Community College. Here is the link to the course description. Scroll down until you see BUS 272 Social Media Marketing for the Web.
